Elaine K. Williams, LMSW, author of The Sacred Work of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, is facilitating a support group for parenting grandparents and relatives as parents. This will be an ongoing group whose purpose is to offer support and resources to anyone who is raising a grandchild, niece or nephew. Elaine has worked with parenting grandparents and their grandchildren since 2011 and is a national speaker who works to bring national attention and resources to this growing trend. PCS-Counseling is deeply invested in offering this support to the community. Please join us: babysitting / child care is available for your grandchildren.

The incidence of grandparents raising their grandchildren on a full-time or part-time basis has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. This workshop will affirm the deep commitment and sacrifices grandparents make to raise their grandkids; while addressing ways to cope with five of the biggest social/emotional challenges parenting grandparents have identified. These include:

  • managing inter-generational differences
  • coping with the judgments and criticisms of family and friends
  • exploring the many losses and associated grief that both grandparents and grandchildren experience
  • managing the strong emotions, guilt, fear, anger, shame, etc. many grandparents experience related to what has happened to their own adult child and the feelings of abandonment, rejection and neglect their grandchildren may experience
  • finding time and motivation to commit to self-care and forgiveness, including self-forgiveness

These are heavy duty challenges, so until we can meet, share and support each other, remember:

  • Do not judge yourself
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Remind yourself you are doing your best
  • Remember being a parenting grandparent is noble and sacred work
